I don't remember how the conversation or why I brought it up (knowing me it might not have been related to anything at all) but at a Super Bowl party last weekend I was talking to someone about movies. I told them that I remember going to the grocery store as a kid (Sobey's in Moncton) and complaining because all of the good movies were only on BETA.
The response- "What's BETA?"
I probably never watched anything on BETA, and I only remember one family that had one, but at least I knew what it was. I swear I'm not more than two or three years older than these people, but at the time it was the oldest I'd ever felt.
Then late this past week I was talking to my wife and reminiscing about a trip I took to Mount Washington the summer between grade nine and grade ten. The summer of 1992. Almost 15 years ago. When I realized that, that was the oldest I'd ever felt in my life.
We totally had a BETA. I remember all the good stuff only being on VHS. And then how suddenly there was NOTHING on BETA, but dad insisting it was better anyhow.
Pound puppies. Wow. Mine was one of the ones that had a pouch for the baby pups inside. There's another throwback.

Heh! When VHS and Beta came out, one of the school boards around here went and bought a whole bunch of Beta players. Ooooops!
I felt old the other day when I realized my Pound Puppy (and you must remember those) is 22 years old. Cripes.

Also making me feel old- I am older than 10 of the Thrashers, including the three superstars.

The parents of my Kindergarten students are younger than I am. That makes me feel old.

By the summer of 1992, I had already dropped out of university. Your post made me feel like Ancienty McNearlydeaderson.

Beta was the bomb! But I'm so old, I remember when people/suckers had to buy memberships at their local video rental establishments. Back then shops stocked both Beta and VHS tapes, and the VHS version of the movie I wanted was always checked out. But the Beta was in-stock gathering dust. For that reason alone I wanted a Beta deck!
Just think, someday kids are going to be like, "What's a 'DVD'?"

Ben, I have a sinking feeling that in the coming years, you're going to feel the oldest you've ever felt over and over and over again. It happens to me at the start of every school year when I realize what year my freshmen were born in.
