There's not much you can say about the passing of a legend. As Canada's last surviving winner of the Victoria Cross Smoky was a Canadian institution. Everything you need to know about the man can be found here. I knew the man was a bit rebellious but I'd never heard that he was promoted to corporal nine times (which can only be done if you get busted back down to private nine times like Smith did).
The man was a hero and was known to presidents, prime ministers and royalty. Thanks for showing us what being a hero means Smoky. By the way, that's my brother on the right. He might not be a legend like Smoky but as an RCMP officer and former NATO peacekeeper he's a hero in his own right.
Smokey was active right up until the end. Just a under two months ago he was in Normandy to partake in ceremonies commemorating the 60th anniversary of D-Day. I had the priviledge of attending several events with him. At 91 years of age he kept his sense of humour and sharp wit and was still a ladies' man. "Through the mud and the blood to the green fields beyond." Cuidich'n Righ', Smokey.
