Rob Mitchum at Pitchfork hates the new Weezer album and gives it a 0.4 out of 10. Rob Mitchum has very, very different taste in music than I do. Apparently he's upset that the album isn't as neurotic as the Weezer of 10 years ago. Personally I really, really like Make Believe. At least now I know no to listen to anything Rob Mitchum ever has to say again. Ever.
Does anyone else have thoughts on the new disc? Rich? Dennis? Steve? Mark? I know you're out there somewhere...
I'm with Ben on this one. While it's not great, it seems much more like the old, fun Weezer to me, and I'm glad of that. I mean, while I like Maladroit, for example, it just seemed a bit dark and heavy for Weezer.
I can understand if you jumped on the Weezer bandwaggon mid-stream how Make Believe might put you off, but when I hear people say that it's not "true" Weezer I've just got to chuckle a bit.
As well, that Pitchfork review was just plain ridiculous. Is it just me, or do many of their reviews seem overwrought, too damn long and way too "hyped-up"?? I mean, I'm all for a clever turn of phrase, but damn...

It's power pop people, not high art. There's some catchy stuff on there and that's all I ask for from Weezer.

Sorry Ben, I'm with Pitchfork on this one.

I'll be surprised if you remember or can hum any of these songs in 6 months, let alone 2 years.

While I don't expect 'make believe' to win any Grammy Awards I think that musically it sounds a lot closer to Pinkerton and the blue album than their last two discs did. Lyrically it's weak but do you know what? I own Maladroit and I can't name, sing or hum a single song off of it. The only song I remember from the green album is Dope Nose and that's only because it was so obnoxious.
This album might not be lyrically deep or even particularly interesting but it has muliptle fun power pop songs that I can sing along to, and that's all I ask for from a band like Weezer. 'Best Friend' is actually one of my favourite songs on the album. Yup, it's pure bubble gum pop, but that's fine with me. It's catchy.
'Peace','Hold Me' and 'Freak Me Out' are actually pretty solid Weezer-esque songs.
Regardless giving it 0.4 out of 10 was ridiculously harch for Pitchfork. Britney Spears gets better reviews than that.

Dennis -- I totally agree with you on "Beverly Hills". That awful "gimme gimme" or whatever the heck she's saying makes me think of "Pretty Fly for a White Guy". Very sad.

Haven't heard it yet but I would take anything Pitchfork says with a grain of salt. They tend to love music until someone else hears about it and it becomes popular. I'll download it (I'm not that big a fan of Weezer to buy it) and check it out. I personally thought Maladroit to be superior to the earlier stuff.

I actually agreed with the pitchfork review. I think the new Weezer is un originial [even for Weezer] and boring. Some of the worst songs Rivers has ever written. "We Are All On Drugs" is ridiculously bad, as is "My Best Friend". And dont get me started on "Beverly Hills". It sounds like a bad cover of an Offspring song.
What i cant figure out is, apparently they wrote over 100 songs for this album, and these are the 12 they picked. The other 88 songs must have been aweful.
Very disapointed with the new Weezer. Can you tell?
