I saw Tim Burton's Big Fish yesterday afternoon and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was different from what I expected in a way that I can't quite put my finger on, and as a result it took me about 20-30 minutes to really get into it, but all in all I thought it was a great film. In my head there's a distinction between movies and films with movies being the mass-produced stuff that fills theatres in the summer and during holiday seasons. You know- the all flash no substance stuff. Escapist movies that are great for entertainment but don't generally get you thinking. Well Big Fish wasn't one of those. It was a real film with a moving story that was both simple and complex at the same time. It got insanely cheesy and sentimental at times and reminded me of Forrest Gump in many ways but it all worked for me by the end. I don't expect it to win many of the big awards, but it was definately one of my favourite movies from the last year.
I want to see it, but it hasn't come to PEI yet. Nor has Cold Mountain. Little buggers!

I loved it. It was a bit saccharine at times, but also weird enough that I could look past any cheesy sentiment.
