Do I Wonder? Apparently Not

How many of Howard Hillmans's Top 100 Wonders of the World have you seen?

I've seen one- the New York City skyline which I've seen from a variety of angles including from the Empire State Building observation deckat night as well as from the roof of the Banana Bungalow Hostel in New York, which was on Broadway at the time. Despite spending 4 or 5 days in New York city I didn't make it to the Metropolitan Museum of Art of the Statue of Liberty, which I suppose I could say I've seen from a distance but not really from close enough to count.

I have a friend who may or may not read this page... he's lived in Israel and London and has visited New Zealand numerous times since it's his wife's home country. I expect that he's seen a good chunk of these wonders since he's also travelled in africa and throught Europe and, I swear, once said to me (after seeing the trailer for Troy in a theatre) 'Did I ever tell you about the time I went to Troy?" He says stuff like that all the time and is the only person I know who can say from experience that the Palace of Versailles is less tacky than Buckingham Palace.

The point of all of this is to say that I think I need to travel more.

I counted 11 that I've seen. I doubt I'll see many more, since I have no plans anytime soon to travel to Africa, South America or Asia.

I've seen (1) Great Wall of China (16) Forbidden City (73) New York Skyline (88) Statue of Liberty (94) British Museum.

Both the Great Wall and the Forbidden city were fabulous. New York is New York. And Ben, go ahead and count the Statue of Liberty. It's not our fault that Jon would rather see the NYSE ...and we got lost and wound up finding the KittyKat Lounge instead. We saw the statue, we didn't need to touch it. It counts.

the British Museum isn't as marvelous as the Museum of London.

I knew that I haven't travelled a lot, at least not outside of the United States and Canada, but I didn't realize everyone else has travelled so much. Jerks.

I have seen:
17 - Acropolis
23 - Great Barrier Reef
24 - Colosseum
33 - Canals of Venice
37 - St Peter's Basilica
43 - Louvre
45 - Leaning Tower of Pisa
52 - Florence cityscape
53 - Pompeii
69 - St Mark's Basilica
73 - New York skyline
94 - British Museum
100 -Eiffel Tower

I have seen the exteriors of 41, 47, 63, and 88 but didn't go in for various reasons, usually closure or the desire to go to a bar instead.

Nananu-i-ra in Fiji is missing from that list.

17 out of 100 items visited means there's still a lot more for me to see.

I have seen:
17. Acropolis & its Parthenon (one of my favourite pictures of Mrs. Lloyd and I is taken there)
24. Colosseum of Rome
37. St. Peter's Basilica
43. Louvre Museum
51. Hagia Sophia
53. Pompeii (one of the coolest things ever, even though they really need to clean up the litter)
89. Stonehenge
94. British Museum
100. Eiffel Tower

I have seen four sort of: Colosseum of Rome, S.Peter's Basillica, Sistine Chaple, Nauschwanstein Castle. My trip to Europe could be described as "It was closed". I lived in Switzerland for 3 months and once took a trip down to Rome just to see the sistine chaple. Note to anyone going to Rome: do not plan on seeing all of Rome in one day, also the sistine chaple closes it's doors at 1:00 (I was 5 minutes late, so I only saw the outside. And as hard as it may be to believe, the outside was nothing special.). Something that should be on the list that I did not notice was The old Forum, the ruins of the old Roman city. You get to actually walk into an old house walk among the fallen pillars, it was by far my favourite part of Rome. Another trip I made was up to Germany to see Nauschwanstien casle. Note to any one visiting the castle it closes it's doors around 5:00 maybe 5:30. I was 5 minutes late for this also, Although this one was still worth the drive I still got to see it from the parking lot, and up close, which is all I really wanted. Going inside would have been a bonus.

Well, i've been to #33 Canals of Venice, and I must say they were overated; they stank like an open sewer, which they are. #66 Dubrovnik, is in Croatia a few short hours from where I was stationed in Drvar, and is a very popular spot with European tourists. It's very beautiful. #89 Stonehenge has turned into a big tourist trap like Green Gables on PEI. The postcards make it look like it's on the top of a hill in the middle of nowhere when in fact the major road is less than a 100 metres away. But it was still cool. #100, eiffel tower was a bit of a disappointment, because there was approximately a 6 hour wait to go up, so I didn't. I tried to take a picture of it all lit up at night, but it didn't turn out. I'm sure the view would have been impressive. One that's NOT on the list is the Tokyo Tower, which is the same idea as the Eiffel, but about 30 m taller. The view from that was spectacular, even in the smog.

It's a good list; travelling rocks.
